2023 Municipal Election

The following information is preliminary and will be updated as we get closer to the election cycle.  Contact the Finance Office with any questions or to ensure you have the most up to date information about running for City Council.

The 2023 Municipal Election is scheduled for April 11, 2023 (the second Tuesday in April). The following seats are up for election:  Mayor - two year term, Alderman Ward I - two year term, Alderman Ward II - one year term, and Alderman Ward II - two year term.

If you would like to run for a seat, you need to circulate a petition and receive the necessary signatures for your ward. You may start circulating petitions on January 27, and must submit them by 5pm on February 24, 2023 to the office or have them mailed by registered mail postmarked by date and said time.   It is highly recommended that petitions are turned in as soon as they are completed so that there is time to correct any errors.

Signature requirements (5% of registered voters of the ward - SDCL 9-13-9):
Mayor - 2 year term requires - 49 signatures
Alderman, Ward I - 2 year term requires - 30 signatures
Alderman, Ward II - 1 year term requires - 20 signatures
Alderman, Ward II - 2 year term requires - 20 signatures

Petitions can be obtained at the municipal office and can be printed off the SD Sec. of State's website (https://sdsos.gov/elections-voting/upcoming-elections/municipal-school-information/default.aspx). Crooks is a class two municipality. If you decide to print petitions off yourself, make sure they are self-contained (printed on one page front & back).

Before circulating a petition, be sure to read and follow all instructions.  If you have any questions, contact the finance office or county auditor's office.  Petitions with errors must be rejected.   See this link to information from the Secretary of State's Office on how to circulate petitions.  Note this is the information from 2022 and may be updated for 2023 after the beginning of the year:  https://sdsos.gov/elections-voting/assets/HowtoCirculateMunicipalNomPetition2022.pdf
